Questions And Answers

  • NO- WE PROMISE. Our compost program controls odor with sealed bins, frequent emptying, no free liquids, and conservative material rules at the start.

  • No. Poorly managed food waste attracts pests whether it is in a trash can or compost bin. Our program uses tight lids, clean carts, prompt pickup, and simple staff rules. Cleaner regular trash will actually improve the dumpster area.

  • ITS OK -RCR DOESNT CHARGE FOR CONTAMINATION! Start with staff-only, back-of-house collection. Use clear signs, a Compost Captain, and the rule “when in doubt, throw it out.” A small clean stream is better than a large contaminated stream. There is no bad or good and we work with you should contamination become a problem.

  • Liquids should not be poured into compost carts. Wet food is fine, use smaller indoor bins, empty them often, and use approved liners only if RCR accepts them.

  • No. The best pilots start with one easy material stream, such as produce trimmings, coffee grounds, prep scraps, or spoiled produce. Meat, dairy, cooked food, and plate waste can be added later. Keep it simple and expand as you go!

  • Composting may begin as an added service while trash service stays the same. After 60 to 90 days of data, the site can review whether dumpster size or pickup frequency can be reduced from your traditional landfill hauler.

  • Each participant should name a Compost Captain: a manager, kitchen lead, custodian, teacher, or volunteer who checks bins, trains new staff, and communicates problems. RCR is always here to help though!

  • The program should fit the site. Some locations may need only one small sealed outdoor cart. Do not place bins where they interrupt food service, deliveries, safety routes, or cleaning. RCR customizes this for you!

  • Trash is easier, but it sends food scraps to landfill, where nutrients are lost and methane is generated. Composting gives unavoidable scraps a better destination and gives your organization a positive, measurable community story and environmental impact. Why recycle? Because we know it’s the right thing to do. Why compost? Because we know it’s the right thing to do!
